Development of ultra-precision machining procedure of polishing-free surfaces for the manufacturing process of multifocal ocular lenses

Project description: This project initiated by MEDICONTUR Kft. aims at developing an ultra-precision machining procedure that leads to obtaining high optical quality intraocular lens (IOL) surfaces that do not require post-process polishing. This procedure will enable the company to manufacture optical implants that work on the basis of the combined physical principles of diffraction and refraction. As a result of the successful development of this technology the company will be able to produce multifocal intraocular lenses. The optical surface created with the new procedure will be able to use diffraction as well. In contrast, the lenses manufactured until now have only been able to use merely the physical principle of refraction. From now on the new lenses will have another focal point in addition to the focal point created with the refraction. The post-process polishing eliminates the diffraction areas from the surface of the lenses; therefore, it is necessary to develop the so-called polishingfree machining technology. This will ensure an additional quality feature of the currently manufactured refraction lenses.
